PatScream PATRICK TORTURE!
This contains torture to Patrick Star, so if you're a fan of him, look away NOW.

Waiting is an extremely high ULTRA-infamous episode of SpongeBob SquarePants. It is also the second of The 83 Trilogy. In this episode, SpongeBob waits for a toy to arrive in the mail.

Why This Episode Isn't Worth Waiting For[]

  1. SpongeBob's behavior is one of the most criticized elements of this episode:
    • He is highly adamant on waiting for the toy he ordered, so much so that he refuses to leave his mailbox and acts like a hostile jerk towards his friends.
    • Sandy invites him to do karate with her only to get thrown down and her offer rudely declined by SpongeBob,
    • Gary tries to tell SpongeBob that he's hungry and is refused by SpongeBob, who then loudly complains about not being left alone in waiting for the toy.
    • This is very out of character for SpongeBob because it is made clear he loves Gary and wants to meet his needs.
    • Then, best friend Patrick comes back and greets SpongeBob just to tell him that he missed his own birthday party, only to be yelled at by his best friend.
    • If you don't think this is bad enough, there's an even worse scene where Patrick causes the toy's head and limbs to spring off, and SpongeBob goes berserk and yells at Patrick for "breaking" it, even though he didn't.
  2. ALL OF THIS OVER A TOY WERE ALL YOU DO IS PRESS A BUTTON THEN IT EXPLODES! How cheap!
  3. The episode has also been deemed boring by fans, with not much happening in the first half of the episode except for SpongeBob behaving rudely and aggressively to his friends.
  4. The lack of funny jokes does not help with this issue, either.
  5. The toy itself is also very ugly.
  6. Some people think that this episode was a beginning of SpongeBob's flanderization, only to be turned out wrong that Boating Buddies was a beginning of SpongeBob's flanderization to annoying obsessive crybaby who constantly stalks and disturbs Squidward for no reason.

Redeeming Qualities That Are Worth The Wait[]

  1. The first minute of the episode is good.
  2. Every character except SpongeBob is likable:
    1. Squidward does knock some sense into SpongeBob and Patrick by pressing the toy's head and telling them it's supposed to have the head and limbs spring out at the end of the episode.
    2. Squidward fixed the toy for SpongeBob, much to his dismay.
    3. Squidward, Sandy, Patrick (despite being in SpongeBob's outburst of a toy being "broken", even though it's not) and the rest characters in this episode are likable.
    4. Patrick was nice enough to try to give SpongeBob a slice of cake after he missed his own birthday party.
  3. Depending in your opinion, SpongeBob did feel remorseful for acting like a mean jerk to Sandy, Gary, and Patrick. Especially when the latter revealed that he missed his own birthday party at the Krusty Krab.
  4. The premise could've been salvaged if the mail was more consequential if SpongeBob missed it.
  5. Good Ending: SpongeBob and Patrick finally calm down after Squidward "fixes" the toy.
  6. This episode spawned a music archivist for the series, "YOU BROKE IT".
  7. This episode can make up for a lot of the times Patrick was a jerk.
  8. Patrick did deserve to get this kind of payback after all he’s done to SpongeBob in episodes like Driven to Tears or Rule of Dumb.

Reception[]

Waiting is considered as one of the worst episodes of the series along with episodes like One Coarse Meal, The Card, The Splinter, Demolition Doofus, A Pal For Gary, Fungus Among Us, Choir Boys, To Love A Patty, Stuck In The Wringer, Smoothe Jazz At Bikini Bottom, Big Sister Sam, and Pet Sitter Pat. "Waiting" also has received mostly negative criticism from fans. It has a user rating of 3.8 out of 10 on SpongeBuddy Mania and a user rating of 6.4 out of 10 based on 369 user votes on IMDb along with its sister episodes, Rise and Shine and Fungus Among Us

How to fix the episode![]

  • Make SpongeBob less jerky to his ''friends''.
  • Have SpongeBob find fun ways to pass the time.
  • Have a more legitimate reason for Spongebob to be waiting for the mail to arrive. For example: If he had something very important to wait for.
  • In the infamous "YOU BROKE IT" scene, reveal in the end of it that Spongebob was just kidding all along.

Trivia[]

  • Ironically, this episode was paired with semi-infamous episode Rise and Shine & hyper-infamous episode Fungus Among Us, with the former being shown before this episode & the latter being shown after it.
  • This is EmployeeAMillion's 4th least favorite season 5 episode.
