The Gift of Gum is a semi-infamous episode of SpongeBob SquarePants. In this episode, Patrick gives SpongeBob a glob of gum for Best Friends Day.
Why It's A Gift Of Scum[]
This episode's plot is considered ridiculous, particularly during the first portion: Gummy is shown to be riddled with repulsive unmentionables that Patrick rolled up like it was Katamari Damacy. On the otherhand though something about SpongeBob getting Patrick a robotic servant doesn't add up to their friendship: You think he'd be able to come up with a better gift like the same net that he has in Best Day Ever/The Pink Purloiner, or even a new Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy action figure that would be worth the clam that the sea floor is built on.
Then, of course, there's the unexplainable answers that come with what evils that Gummy has committed: How long where those people trapped in the blob of gum for? Wouldn't be surprising that there were some medieval knights, cowboys from the American Frontier or the Wild West, tribal warriors of East Africa or even ancient historical figures trapped inside along with the citizens of the Bikini Bottom; it just goes to show what the evil starfish has been up to for a long time.
Another thing worth mentioning is that whenever SpongeBob tries to rid himself of this abomination, Patrick is a god who can teleport anywhere and has his own "Gummy" senses tingling that'll alert him to whatever he's trying to do to the gift he gave his friend. Matter of fact: even though it's clear he took a long time to build the gumball up to that size for this special occasion, why would he have it anyhow? Did SpongeBob get the robot servant from Sandy? Nothing is clear at this moment in time.
Aside from its gross visuals, the episode is flawed with its portrayal of the main characters. Patrick takes a high-and-mighty tone where it really doesn't make sense, and SpongeBob really submits to it easily. Considering how oblivious and appreciative SpongeBob is, it's bizarre that he'd so quickly try to get rid of it. There are some contrivances, such as SpongeBob having a massive plowing machine to push Gummy, and it's hard to overlook when the jokes they enable are pointless and land where the sun don't shine.
Also this episode was the box art for the DVD box set "The Complete Fourth Season", and it doesn't deserve to be.
Redeeming Quality[]
At least it just harmless unlike Fungus Among Us
