This contains torture to SpongeBob SquarePants, so if you're a fan of him, look away NOW.

Stuck in the Wringer is a MORBID-infamous[1] episode of SpongeBob SquarePants. In this episode, after getting stuck in his wringer, SpongeBob tries to continue his usual day without any difficulties.

Air Date for this episode: JULY 19, 2009

Synopsis[]

SpongeBob gets stuck in his wringer after he slips on 2 soaps and 1 rubber duck. His condition only gets worse when Patrick, who fails to understand the situation, uses "Forever Glue" to permanently trap SpongeBob inside it. SpongeBob tries to go about his usual day, but as a result falls upon hardships. He eventually stands up for himself, but let's just say it doesn't end well.

Why This Episode Should Get Stuck In The Wringer[]

  1. This is yet another SpongeBob torture episode, where it made SpongeBob have the worst day in his life.
  2. As usual for episodes in Seasons 6-8, Patrick is extremely out-of-character and this time, he's at his absolute worst as he thinks it would help by permanently trapping SpongeBob inside his wringer with his "Forever Glue" and is oblivious to the fact that it made things worse for his own best friend, even psychologically and physically, showing how much of a terrible friend Patrick is to SpongeBob.
    • And as like he said The Card, he intentionally trapped his friend in a wringer.
    • Thanks to him, SpongeBob has a hell of a day, no pun intended. He gets thrown out of the Krusty Krab because of the wringer. After this Patrick takes SpongeBob to get ice-cream, but since the wringer blocks his esophagus, he can't digest the ice-cream! But it only gets worse from here, Patrick then takes SpongeBob to the carnival & while he has lots of fun, SpongeBob continues to suffer, as he gets a black eye & flung off a ride, & Patrick either is oblivious for his stupidity or doesn't seem to care about all the suffering his best friend is going through!
    • To add salt on the injury, this would've been a "perfect" episode to be a predated version of One Coarse Meal, without the suicide!
  3. There is a very disturbing scene in the kitchen at the Krusty Krab where SpongeBob accidentally shoots mustard onto Squidward's eyes, literally melting them as a result before both of them fall out from his face & then onto an incomplete Krabby Patty.
  4. The middle part is very boring, where Patrick takes SpongeBob to do everything fun, but meanwhile, SpongeBob gets injured repetitively.
  5. The infamously infuriating scene where after SpongeBob loses his temper and chews out Patrick for making his situation worse, our porous pal gets shamed by the townsfolk, who tell him that he has no heart and deserves to be trapped in his wringer as punishment (which he didn't, as SpongeBob is the one who had been suffering throughout this episode, even visibly). Talk about kicking the dog. They didn't know the full story, you say? At the time, SpongeBob snaps at Patrick and calls him out for his actions, the townspeople were clearly witnessing & overhearing the argument, and SpongeBob was visibly suffering, physically & emotionally, at the moment. Are the Bikini Bottom townspeople this unlikable?! Not to mention the fact some of them could've seen him getting injured throughout the day on all the carnival rides Patrick took him on.
    • It seemed that the townsfolk either took on Patrick's side because he claimed he was only trying to help or because they thought SpongeBob was a bit harsh to Patrick & they feel sorry for him because Patrick got upset, meaning Patrick made SpongeBob look like the bad-guy in a way, despite that SpongeBob has rightfully scolded Patrick for his foolishness.
    • There was also another scene where Patrick tried to stay angry at SpongeBob for finally standing up to him. It was his own fault, so he shouldn't blame SpongeBob since he went through an unfortunate set of circumstances in this episode. And it even shows that Patrick can't take criticism or because he still claims he tried to help SpongeBob in the 1st place, and that Patrick can't take responsibilities for his actions.
    • The worst part is that the townsfolk get off SCOT-FREE for shaming SpongeBob, making them Karma Houdinis.
    • This scene can teach a abysmal moral to kids that standing up for yourself is wrong, like the one episode we do not even want to talk about...
  6. The entire set-up for this episode is contrived, as it consists of SpongeBob slipping on a bar of soap he dropped onto the floor, rockets around his bathroom & gets stuck in his wringer, only for Patrick to permanently trap SpongeBob inside the wringer with his "Forever Glue".
  7. Bad Moral: SpongeBob flat-out says "I guess crying does solve your problems after all", which is nonsensical and false, because crying definitely doesn't solve anyone's problems. It doesn't come across as a "joke moral"; instead, it comes across as a real moral than something to laugh at.
    • Not helping is that SpongeBob literally says it whilst appearing to look straight at the camera, as if he is actually talking to the viewer and thus breaking the fourth wall, so the message has the subtlety of a sledgehammer being swung at your face.
    • Like said in WISGSITW #5, there's another bad moral WatchMojo pointed out: standing up for yourself is wrong (referring to the infamous scene where SpongeBob yelled at Patrick).
  8. Bad Ending: In the end, SpongeBob gets stuck in the wringer again, but this time with Patrick, the latter asks if he should get the glue, implying that he has never learned his lesson.
  9. No one except SpongeBob is likeable in this episode. (The Bikini Bottomies were good in the Krusty Krab only)
  10. Missed Opportunity: Couldn't he go to Sandy's treedome instead of Patrick to get freed from the wringer?

Redeeming Qualities That Shouldn’t Be In The Wringer:[]

  1. It is one of the fewer episodes in seasons 6 & 7 where SpongeBob has his original personality.
  2. SpongeBob snapping at & blaming Patrick for his suffering is extremely cathartic.
    • The yelling from Tom Kenny in the scene where SpongeBob snaps at & blaming Patrick for his suffering is actually justified here since he needed anger for that to happen & surprisingly enough, this one is very tolerable.
  3. SpongeBob freaking out over the bar of soap falling to the ground. Not as funny as the "Doubloons, don't drop 'em!" joke, but it's still funny.
  4. Depending on your view, the scene where Patrick tells SpongeBob not to give up making the Krabby Patties while a Krabby Patty flag is in the background is decent.
  5. Also depending on your view, while SpongeBob was cooking Krabby Patties with the wringer attached to him and he accidentally squirts mustard in Squidward’s eyes, that can be laughable.
  6. It's pretty surprising that SpongeBob was able to make a Krabby Patty while being stuck in a wringer. At least it makes more sense than in "The Splinter," where SpongeBob said that he's an ambidextrous, but instead, he ended up tying the spatula to his nose & making a Krabby Patty.
  7. At least Patrick finally realized his actions towards SpongeBob that caused the whole problem in the first place.
  8. At least SpongeBob was able get out of the wringer, even though he gets stuck in it again with Patrick at the end of the episode.
  9. Super Weenie Hut Jr's returns in this episode from the famous episode, "No Weenies Allowed."
  10. There are some funny moments, such as the "CARNIVAL ALWAYS HERE" joke, & even the infamous "Crying solves your problems" quote, depending on your view.
    1. The "Crying solves your problems" quote is intended to be sarcastic and a joke moral and isn't intended to be serious,
  11. In the beginning, it actually shows a lesson to be careful with soap.
  12. At least Patrick got his comeuppance in the end when he gets stuck in the wringer.

Reception[]

Stuck in the Wringer” received overwhelmingly negative reviews. It currently holds a 4.1/10 on IMDb, making it the fourth worst SpongeBob episode, It’s considered one of the worst SpongeBob SquarePants episodes of all time. In fact, an IMDb rating said “It's getting really hard to defend Patrick”.

Recently, TheMysteriousMrEnter re-reviewed this episode in his "Enter's Corner" series, where he viewed it less negatively than it did 9 years ago. He stated that the episode could've worked if the 'forever glue' was taken out of the episode, & he didn't have much of a grudge towards the "joke" moral at the end.[2]

Nathaniel Bandy ranked this episode 49th of the 50 episodes in season 7 only above THAT EPISODE...

How to Get This Episode Out Of The Wringer:[]

  • Turn the Bikini Bottomites against Patrick.
  • Give this episode a good plot like this!: "When SpongeBob gets stuck in his wringer, Patrick can't find a way to get him out!" or "When SpongeBob can't get out of his wringer, he calls Sandy for help!".
    • Perhaps show a montage of Patrick trying to get SpongeBob out of the wringer (similar to how they did to Mr. Krabs' first dollar in "Wet Painters"). & make it like a "Looney Toons"-esque vibe & after all the failed attempts, have Patrick take SpongeBob to the hospital or to Sandy so he could get freed.
  • Change the "crying will solve your problems" moral scene so the viewer clearly understands it is a joke moral, or just make the moral "Crying doesn't solve your problems" instead.
  • Don't make Patrick a dummy buddy.
  • Get Sandals & the other Bikini Bottomites punishments for shaming SpongeBob or remove that scene entirely.
  • Have SpongeBob get the forever glue stuck to the wringer with him in it on accident.
  • Add Sandy to the plot.
  • If you do not want to, then have Patrick look back to the ways he tortured SpongeBob, and decides that as a way to apologize to SpongeBob for torturing him, he makes a solvent to free SpongeBob from the forever glue.

Quotes[]

Here are the infamous quotes for not only the episode, but also, the entire show itself together!

Patrick (purposely sticks SpongeBob in the wringer with permanent glue): There you go, buddy! Now you’re stuck forever! (SpongeBob is trying to get out of his wringer, NOT stay stuck! What is wrong with you, Patrick?!?!).

Mr. Krabs: Help?! I think you've “helped” quite enough today! And don't even think about coming back here until that destructive device of yours is gone! (LISTEN, YOU HYPOCRITICAL CHEAPSKATE! You helped get a splinter off him! Why didn't you bother helping him getting out of the wringer?!).

Sandals: You know, kid, your body isn’t the problem. It’s your heart. (SpongeBob's heart groans in sadness because of his guiltiness) You deserve what you’ve gotten. Come on, we’re out of here! Some people are just born mean. (Seriously, SpongeBob just scolded Patrick and you're not grateful for him?! What is matter with you people.).

SpongeBob, after have got out of his wringer: I guess crying does solves your problems after all! (No, it doesn't.).

SpongeBob: Help?! I think you've “helped” quite enough today! (An ironic echo that should’ve made the witnesses turn on Patrick).

Patrick: Well, at least we're together, heh! Hey, should I get the glue? (No, no you should not, Fatprick.).
