Why This Scene Made Us Feel So Grinchy?[]
Every citizen in Bikini Bottom liked Christmas a lot. But Squidward, SpongeBob's grinchy neighbor who lives next door between him and Patrick, DID NOT! In the beginning of the franchise's first Christmas-themed episode, SpongeBob learns about the joy of Christmas from his friend, Sandy. And when the happy-go-lucky sponge goes around to spread Christmas cheer to everyone, Squidward, as grumpy as usual, does not want to take any part of the festivities. Squidward spent most of the episode disbelieving in everything SpongeBob said about Christmas, Santa Claus, reindeer, elves, the North Pole, and everything else people believe in to celebrate the holiday. Because he stupidly believes that SpongeBob is spreading lies and is being a crazy lunatic. And to make matters worse, he even blurted out to SpongeBob that doesn't believe in Santa Claus! Squidward, are you really that stupid?! Do you not pay attention to the calendar every year?! SpongeBob and Sandy are telling the truth that Christmas is a real holiday! And it is something special for everyone to celebrate! But you're just too proud and stubborn to see it! The next day, Christmas Day, Santa never came because Sandy forgot to tell SpongeBob that he only comes when everyone is asleep. Everyone including Patrick leaves SpongeBob in disappointment. A few moments later, Squidward comes out of his house and mockingly "wishes everyone a Merry Christmas!". He then goes to mock a sad SpongeBob by taking a picture of him, thus signifying the birth of his embarrassing snapshot! Talk about adding insult to injury! He then sings "The Very First Christmas" and dances to it in a mockingly, mean-spirited fashion! As he dances, an image of a donkey appears on the scene to signify what a stupid, childish bully he is! (But that part was to play out for laughs) And to wrap up his cruel act, Squidward then laughs heinously at SpongeBob by shaking his butt in front of him and then slapping at it! Squidward, how dare you make fun of SpongeBob and his attempts of bringing the joys of Christmas to Bikini Bottom! All he was simply trying to do was to make people happy! And all you did was ruin it for him! YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF, YOU GRINCHY, OLD OCTOPUS!!
Redeemable qualities that restores our Christmas spirit[]
- But despite this initial heartbreak and the cruel treatment he got from Squidward, SpongeBob was kind enough to give his grouchy neighbor a thoughtful Christmas gift: a hand-carved, wooden clarinet.
- And what happened then? Well, in Bikini Bottom they say. That the grinchy Squidward's small heart grew three sizes that day.
- Squidward was so touched by the gift SpongeBob gave him, he began to realize what a horrible jerk he had been to the little guy and to everyone else who supported him. And because of his disbelief in the holidays, as well as his grouchy attitude, it started to dawn on him that he nearly ruined SpongeBob's chances of spreading Christmas cheer to Bikini Bottom.
- To atone for his rudeness, Squidward dressed as Santa Claus and made SpongeBob happy once again.
- He then goes on to restore the Bikini Bottomites's Christmas spirit by giving away all of his belongings as gifts.
- And to wrap it all up, he receives a thank you letter from the real Santa Claus who was then seen flying above him in his magic sleigh.
How to fix this scene[]
- Have Sandy appear in this scene and scold Squidward for his mistreatment towards SpongeBob.
- And better yet, have her do an allude to "A Charlie Brown Christmas" where she explains the true meaning of Christmas not just to Squidward and SpongeBob, but to everyone in Bikini Bottom.
- Plus, have her cheer SpongeBob up and explain to him that Santa only comes when people are sound asleep at night.
