Penny Foolish is a low infamous episode of SpongeBob SquarePants. In this episode, an obsessed Mr. Krabs must find a penny when SpongeBob found it across the street.

Why Its Not Even Worth a Penny[]

  1. The premise of Mr. Krabs being obsessed with a penny and desperately trying to find it is not that interesting for an entire episode and would work much better for a single scene or a short.
  2. It ironically contradicts all previous episodes involving Mr. Krabs and pennies, all for the sake of plot contrivance.
  3. Though some think that Mr. Krabs' flanderization started as far back as "Krabby Land" or "Whale of a Birthday", compared to those episodes, it was actually this episode that started Mr. Krabs' flanderization, as he becomes incredibly obsessed with one measly penny that he believed SpongeBob picked up the street, to the point that he'd go to EXTREME lengths to obtain it, like building a movie theater, setting up a play, and even breaking into his employee's house.
  4. Krabs' obsession is played here like a mental illness that he cannot resist and eventually succumbs; whenever he sees round objects, he visualizes them as a penny, which just derails him from his focus to reality.
  5. Squidward is practically brain-dead and acts entirely emotionless throughout the episode.
  6. In the beginning, after seeing SpongeBob pick up a penny, Mr. Krabs says that he can remember the whole thing as if it just happened a moment ago. Then, we, the audience, watch the exact same 12 seconds where SpongeBob picks up a penny. There's absolutely no reason why this entire part plays twice without any variety (other than the buildings in the background being different).
  7. Bad ending: Turns out, that "penny" was actually a wet and soggy paper bill, initially thought to be a piece of gum. Gary rejects it. Outside of SpongeBob's house, Eugene, still unable to get over his obsession, randomly digs out in the front yard in search of a mere penny.
  8. The Brain Spider chasing scene was a semi-infamous and semi-famous scene.
  9. Overall, it's one of the most boring episodes of the whole show, just like how the rest of the season along with the season afterwards is mostly boring.

Redeeming Qualities[]

  1. People hearing Mr. Krabs, while talking, act like a dolphin was funny.
  2. At least Mr. Krabs told SpongeBob what happened at the beginning of this episode, near at the end, giving the episode a touching moment.

Trivia[]

This and it’s sister episode, Nautical Novice, played the same music in the title card, Drunken Sailor.
