Little Yellow Book is a SCUMBOB!-infamous episode[1] of SpongeBob SquarePants. In this episode, After Squidward reads SpongeBob's diary out loud to everyone in the Krusty Krab, he is ridiculed, arrested, and beaten like a dog by the Bikini Bottomites.
AIR DATE FOR THIS EPISODE: MARCH 2, 2013
Why You Should Throw Tomatoes At Squidward In This Episode:[]
- First and foremost, it's yet ANOTHER 🐬ING SpongeBob torture episode!
- On that topic, the episode's concept is basically a rip-off of the episode "Fools in April" from Season 1 but without any of the charm and cleverness that episode had, as well as making Squidward even more irredeemable than said episode.
- It is also notorious for having Squidward inconsistently portrayed, making it hard for the viewer to root for and sympathize with him.
- In fact, he is at his absolute worst in this episode. He had no business taking SpongeBob’s private property and spilling his secrets out loud in public. Similar to "A Day Without Tears", he wants to make SpongeBob cry.
- Yes, Squidward did make SpongeBob cry in Fools in April, but unlike this episode, he states that he didn't mean to make him cry. Here, he made SpongeBob cry on purpose.
- It should be worth noting that while Squidward does generally dislikes SpongeBob and even hates him as well, there were moments throughout the series where Squidward does care for SpongeBob ("Pizza Delivery" from season one for example), but here, this episode shows none of that. Even after all the pain Squidward went through, the writers managed to make him even unlikable.
- In fact, he is at his absolute worst in this episode. He had no business taking SpongeBob’s private property and spilling his secrets out loud in public. Similar to "A Day Without Tears", he wants to make SpongeBob cry.
- Even though Squidward was being in the wrong for reading SpongeBob's diary, the Bikini Bottomites shaming Squidward isn't entirely justified as they were in fault along with Squidward for reading the diary, which in-turned makes them come off as total hypocrites.
- While not all the Bottomities were completely aware, they could see the diary within view, and probably thought Squidward had some sort of consent, they should've known better, especially during the underwear dancing scene.
- Regarding that, the entire episode feels very contrived and the writing for it doesn’t make any sense, because it raises this questionable plot hole: Who would want to bring their diary to their workplace and leave it out in the open where people could see and read it?
- On a side note though, how come Squidward never notice, called out, confront or even raise a eyebrow about the Bikini Bottomites hypocrisy?
- There is a disgusting scene where Patrick eats a dirty diaper with ketchup from trash!
- SpongeBob crying at what Squidward did to totally being okay with it because of it was a best seller makes no sense.
- Patrick being a hypocrite along with the Bikini Bottomites with Patrick saying that Squidward is blaming everyone but himself when he mentioned that Patrick read it to despite Squidward telling the truth since everyone else did read it. To add salt to the wound, they never got called out or even got punished for their actions unlike Squidward (slightly).
- Bad Ending: Squidward apologizes to SpongeBob for reading his diary, only for Squidward to read SpongeBob's secret personal diary meaning he wasn’t truly sorry for what he did unlike in Fools of April, making SpongeBob cry and run away again, and making the townsfolk throw tomatoes at Squidward while he laughs about it and saying he doesn’t care because it’s so worth it (which it isn't) and the episode ends there. Not only does this ending undo Squidward's apology, but it also undoes his comeuppance and never learns his lesson, making it one of the most infuriating things this show has spat out.
- It's "Fools in April" done wrong, and it shows the true difference between some of the older seasons to where the show went at some point.
Why This Episode is a Chicken and Should See Plaid[]
- We get to see a nice scene where SpongeBob cooks the Krabby Patties and serves them to the customers (There are some errors in this scene though).
- Some people think scenes such as SpongeBob finding Old Man Walker in the toilet, Mr. Krabs' hairpin and Squidward reading about SpongeBob recounting Squidward cursing at him and Gary biting him in return are funny.
- "Puh... puh... puh-puh-puh... PUH-LAAID?!"
- "Buck-buck-gack! Buck-buck-gack-buck-buck! AH! AH-AH! AH-AAAAAHHHH!"
- Even Tom Kenny himself has cited this as is his favorite meme from the series.
- There's a few people that don't like this scene, though.
- Mr. Krabs is likable in this episode, in that he cares about SpongeBob and wasn’t laughing at him and he was, in fact, disgusted with Squidward for his behavior, so he at least doesn't come across as a hypocrite in the episode unlike everyone else.
- Adding to this, Mr. Krabs isn't flanderized like he usually is.
- SpongeBob is also likable and sympathetic in this episode.
- The Bikini Bottomites throwing tomatoes at Squidward is justifiable (regardless of them being in fault along with Squidward). (Bad quality: They don't really care about SpongeBob's diary, they wanted better ways to punish him).
- At least Squidward did get some comeuppance for reading SpongeBob's diary, But it’s been completely undone when he steals SpongeBob’s personal diary.
- SpongeBob dancing to the Bikini Bottom anthem in his underwear may also be considered funny, at least before SpongeBob sees Squidward, Patrick and the Bottomites laughing at his face and seeing that they read his diary.
- Depending on your view, it can be seen as Squidward Torture done right.
- It spawned the "Mocking SpongeBob" meme.
How to fix this episode[]
- Have the Bikini Bottomites not notice anything until SpongeBob comes out of the krusty krab.
- Have Squidward truly learn his lesson in the end.
- If Squidward reads SpongeBob's Diary, then DESTROY SQUIDWARD!!!
Reception[]
This, along with Squid Baby and SpongeBob You're Fired, is one the three most despised segments of Season 9. Some fans say this is the worst of the series, along with One Coarse Meal, A Pal for Gary, SpongeBob You're Fired, Ink Lemonade, To Love a Patty, Good Neighbors, and Fungus Among Us. PIEGUYRULZ considered it ScumBob, but he stated this episode isn't that bad as well, the fact that this is his 5th least favorite SpongeBob Season 9 episode proves it.
