Fungus Among Us is a HYPER-infamous episode[1] of SpongeBob SquarePants. It is also the third and final episode of The 83 Trilogy. In this episode, SpongeBob contracts an itchy fungus and inadvertently spreads it across Bikini Bottom.
Why This Episode Should Get the Fungus[]
- This episode name is boring and can be found in many other shows, such as Miss Spider's Sunny Patch Friends and Milo's Murphy Law.
- Both this and Waiting are generally considered the worst of The 83 Trilogy; while Rise and Shine is considered meh, this episode might be just as disgusting as The Splinter, if not more.
- Also, somehow none of the Bikini Bottomites realize they're eating/drinking the fungus in their food, which is both revolting and a clear showcase of the Bottomites' stupidity.
- Not to mention how lazy and idiotic it is that Squidward can see the fungus on Spongebob’s nose, but can’t see it when it’s all over his body and all over the Krusty Krab?? What??
- Patrick acts awful by popping SpongeBob's plastic bubble! WHY PATRICK WHY! And that infamous bubble pop scene has a sequel!
- Squidward knew SpongeBob needed to go to the hospital BUT CALLED THE SWAT TEAM INSTEAD!! and it's also SpongeBob torture.
- The HAZMAT team put Spongebob and Gary into two quarantine bubbles. It made sense as it was punishment for Spongebob, but why Gary? He did nothing wrong here, he just tried to help save the day.
- There is even a sequel episode that is related to this episode, which is called Kwarantined Krab, which it had not premiered yet because of this episode have the same plot as the coronavirus pandemic.
- Look in the images section to see how disgusting and awful these scenes are.
Redeeming Qualities[]
- SpongeBob is the only one who's likeable.
- The episode shows the spread of viruses and coronaviruses very well which can be very useful during the pandemic. Even though it's gross, it still gets the point across pretty good, despite the episode as a whole being absolutely awful.
- It does have some good humor (like the pirate joke)
- Putting Spongebob into the bubble the first time makes sense as comeuppance for not letting Gary eat the fungus (just that Gary was placed in a bubble too for nothing)
- The ending isn't bad because Gary saved the day. It proves he is a hero, and not just a pet
- The beginning of the episode isn't that bad.
- The SWAT and HAZMAT team actually did help SpongeBob (until Patprick ruined it).
- This episode leaves a good moral: "Never touch unknown substances, especially without wearing personal protective equipment."
How to fix this episode![]
- Remove the dumb Bubble Pop scenes
- In the scene where Squidward calls the SWAT team have Squidward call the hospital instead
- Make it at least entertaining
- Make the bikini bottomites ACTUALLY realize that they are being infected by SpongeBob!
- Rather than revolting when Spongebob enters the Krusty Krab, they should run around in panic.
- Instead of Happy Sponge Chase Vibes playing during the title card do a track that sounds eerie and scary like House of horror.
- Have SpongeBob to not be constantly tortured.
- Instead of the Bikinibottomites eating the food infected with ick, make them see that there is ick on it and complain. Also, make them demand a refund.
Reception[]
Some fans say this is the worst episode of the series, along with One Coarse Meal, To Love a Patty, What Ever Happened to SpongeBob?, Yours, Mine and Mine, A Pal for Gary, The Splinter, SpongeBob You're Fired, Pet Sitter Pat, Little Yellow Book, Truth or Square, Demolition Doofus, Ink Lemonade, Someone's in the Kitchen with Sandy, Choir Boys, Stuck in the Wringer, Smoothe Jazz at Bikini Bottom, and Big Sister Sam. However, PhantomStrider likes this episode, because of its COVID prediction.
