Demolition Doofus is a MORBID-infamous episode[1] of SpongeBob SquarePants. In this episode, Mrs. Puff enters SpongeBob to the demolition derby, where his bad driving makes him a star.
AIR DATE FOR THIS EPISODE: JULY 21, 2012
WHY THIS DOOFUS OF AN EPISODE OF AN EPISODE MUST BE DEMOLISHED!!![]
- First of all, the episode idea of someone getting the idea to kill someone who annoys them is an extremely bad idea, especially in a kids show.
- The premise feels like this should've been in an adult cartoon. (This premise can also give you the scary vibes of a fanmade adult spinoff of SpongeBob, like the rumored "SpongeBob SquarePants: Adult Party Cartoon".)
- Mrs. Puff is REALLY unlikable in this episode and completely at her absolute worst, as she is portrayed as a cold-blooded psychopath who straight-up tries to murder SpongeBob rather than being the paranoid but patient teacher she has always been. She should be smart and mature enough to acknowledge that seeking revenge and murder isn't the answer.
- It is also in some ways a blatant rehash of "Ball of Revenge", an episode of Courage the Cowardly Dog, even though that episode aired ten years earlier and that episode was not any better.
- Mrs. Puff putting SpongeBob into a Demolition Derby to get him killed feels more like something out of a bad Robot Chicken SpongeBob skit or a really bad SpongeBob parody rather than an actual SpongeBob episode.
- Unfunny and cruel attempts at humor.
- Predictable plot where SpongeBob wins each time by doing almost nothing.
- The infamous scene where Mrs. Puff enters the derby using a large truck and chases Spongebob in a desperate attempt to kill him. She is also hitting innocent civilians as if she is playing Carmageddon. SpongeBob, at this point, is shown to be driving flawlessly due to what can only be described as a plot contrivance.
- SpongeBob being entirely mean-spirited by making cruel jokes about Mrs. Puff's critical condition, as well as outright stating that she looks better in said condition, especially when it was his carelessness that caused it. In fact, if it wasn't for his insensitivity towards Mrs. Puff, Mrs. Puff wouldn't have gone full lengths to desperately want to get him killed, granted it doesn't excuse Mrs. Puff's behavior, but it doesn't make SpongeBob worth rooting for either, as he pretty much brought this on himself, which in-turn makes both characters unlikeable.
- The terribly made Ending: Mrs. Puff and SpongeBob both crash into the Boating School and Mrs. Puff somehow randomly regains her puff. They then get injured by the school, which the tower collapses and crushes them, and the episode ends there. How do you call that an ending?
- Mrs. Puff doesn't get any comeuppance for her respective unjustified actions, unlike in most other episodes focused around Mrs. Puff's Boating School where Mrs. Puff always gets arrested for no discernible reason, even though here, she does not get punished for her heartless deeds. Sure, the boating school collapses on her and SpongeBob, but it's still baffling this of all episodes does not result in Mrs. Puff getting arrested.
- Mrs. Puff's infamous quote, "Why are you still ALIVE!?", proves that she wants SpongeBob dead. And to think Mrs. Puff wouldn't get any more heartless.
- Wasted potential: A plot which contains protagonist entering a demolition derby would sound cool on paper if it wasn't for other character's cruel murder attempts and protagonist's abysmal jokes, what would make this episode better that Mrs. Puff would be replaced as Patrick in this episode to help SpongeBob win in demolition derby, but NO, Mrs. Puff just had to be put through in this episode, ruining a whole episode perfectly.
- The very-infamous scene is the rumble, when Mrs. Puff, SpongeBob and the Doctor watches the tough guys in pain. this is very violent and the most painful scene.
- There are no likable characters, yep, I mean none. Well, except Squidward at the start of the episode.
- It has an EXTREMELY bad moral!: If you had it with someone you hate, the best thing to do is to kill them. This moral can count as MURDER.
- This is false advertising at its finest. People will look at the title and think this episode is about SpongeBob and Patrick entering demolition derby, and will think that it will be amazing, the best, and universal. But nOoOooooooOoO! It just HAD to be about
!MURDER
How To Make This Demolition Not A Doofus[]
Even though a plot of someone getting the idea to kill someone who annoys them is an extremely stupid idea, especially in a kids show, it doesn't mean it's unfixable though, as it could be fixed in the following ways:
- For starters, change the plot from Mrs. Puff wanting to kill SpongeBob, to have Mrs. Puff help SpongeBob out by completing his boating test and get her puff back.
- Next, don’t say that the injury is permanent when it clearly wasn’t. Instead, say that the only way to restore Mrs. Puff’s puff is with surgery, but she can’t afford for it. Then have them mention the derby having a cash prize and have Mrs. Puff use SpongeBob’s inability to drive to take her advantage here.
- Also, have Mrs. Puff be more helpful to SpongeBob instead of torturing him and even being more harmful to him.
- Next on the docket, have SpongeBob show more remorse and apologize to Mrs. Puff for what he has done to her instead of telling mean-spirited jokes, or claiming that she looks better in her bad state.
- Plus, change the ending from a bad ending, to a good ending.
- And one more thing, MAKE SURE THAT MRS. PUFF NEVER MENTIONS SPONGEBOB BEING KILLED!!!
Redeeming Qualities[]
- The Demolition Derby was spot-on and is the best part of the episode.
- The beginning of the episode with SpongeBob on a unicycle and helping harvest carrots for Squidward is one of the few good things about the start of the episode, but it's also entertaining, too.
- Plus, Squidward thanks SpongeBob for his help. Even though he was baffled in his tone, his gratitude was genuine.
- Furthermore, he is the only likable character in this episode.
- SpongeBob bringing flowers to Mrs. Puff at the hospital was actually kind of nice (despite Mrs. Puff being allergic to them).
- The book adaptation toned down Mrs. Puff's grudge against SpongeBob.
- Unlike the bad plot idea in WTDADOAEMD #1, a plot with a demolition derby is pretty cool.
Reception[]
This episode has an overwhelmingly negative reception, with criticism mostly targeted at its dark tone, its subject matter of murder, the massive flanderization of Mrs. Puff into a murderous psychopath, as well as SpongeBob's lack of sympathy towards Mrs. Puff at the start after he carelessly crippled her. It has been commonly cited as one of the worst episodes of the show and holds a 4.5/10 rating on IMDB along with its sister episode, Squiditis, making it the fifth worst SpongeBob episode on IMDb. It also holds a 2.78/10 on SpongeBuddy Mania, making it one of the lowest-rated episodes. The Mysterious Mr. Enter ranked this episode as #5 on his Top 10 WORST Episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants list and compared the episode's premise to a creepypasta. PhantomStrider ranked this as #3 on his Top 6 WORST SpongeBob episodes, as well as #4 in his Top 6 Super Duper HYPER ULTRA infamous ScumBob episodes list inside of his Top 10 Most Hated SpongeBob episodes list. He also mentioned in the video that it is his least favourite episode of the show.
