Cuddle E. Hugs is a mid infamous episode[1] of SpongeBob SquarePants. In this episode, SpongeBob's new friend is a giant fluffy hamster but no one else can see him.
Why It Isn't Gonna Cuddle Nor Hug You[]
This episode is widely disliked for its ridiculous plot and lack of any noticeable redeeming qualities. SpongeBob ignoring the disgusting nature of the moldy patty is something that resembles To Love a Patty, an episode that isn't exactly liked itself. However, it takes it in a new level of gross and ridiculous, showing SpongeBob eating it multiple times and goes back to his hallucinations. Cuddle E. Hugs is a character with no real point, and the way that he appears is bizarre. They try to make the viewer discover why he appeared gradually, but it's very obvious from the beginning. SpongeBob should really see a doctor about the side effects of eating that aged patty: hallucinating a giant hamster who eats people is a clear sign that there is something very wrong with his motives and beliefs. The concept behind SpongeBob seeing a being that nobody else can isn't bad on its own, but when it's a giant talking hamster with a creepy voice and even creepier clinginess, the idea behind it feels ruined. Part of the way through the episode, Patrick is shown being a very possessive friend and Sandy talks down to SpongeBob uncharacteristically. The final scene, in which various Krusty Krab customers are eaten by Hugs, ends the episode with a bad stain on SpongeBob's record and hardly ties up the episode's loose ends.
Notably, the episode may be based of certain drug trips. In this episode, spongebob is completely unaware that he is feeding the hallucinations, and losing touch with reality because of him dissacosiating and thinking his hallucinations are real.
Redeeming Qualities[]
- Some people say it's To Love a Patty done right.
- This episode might be a drug safety episode, where the rotten Krabby Patty might be a metaphor for a drug.
- If that's the case, that it has a good moral to not do drugs.
