This contains torture to SpongeBob SquarePants, so if you're a fan of him, look away NOW.

All That Glitters is an ULTRA-infamous episode[1] of SpongeBob SquarePants. In this episode, SpongeBob breaks his spatula, and is forced to replace it.

Plot[]

When SpongeBob's spatula breaks after trying to flip a monster patty, he sells everything he has to replace it with a very high tech and expensive spatula.

Why this episode isn’t gold[]

  1. For starters, it's a mean-spirited SpongeBob torture episode. NO ONE even bothered helping SpongeBob when his spatula broke, instead they just let him suffer.
    • Speaking of the devil, you will never feel bad for SpongeBob in this episode due to his excessive crying in this episode, you cannot feel ashamed for him, but rather annoyed. Thus making him unlikable. Of course, though, his flanderization isn't officially the norm until the second part of season six, but still, we have to warn you.
  2. Also, the plot itself is very generic and feels rather forced: SpongeBob damaging his spatula and having to replace it. Who finds this idea interesting?
  3. This episode could also be considered a filler episode, as there are so many gags that go on for too long, such as characters being surprised because of The Monster Krabby Patty, SpongeBob crying, SpongeBob reminiscing all the past times he has had with Spat, and him trying to sell all his personal belongings (including his clothes) to the man at the store in a desperate attempt to purchase "Le Spatula" as a replacement.
  4. After SpongeBob's spatula breaks, it starts squeaking and squirming around like a decapitated animal, which is just creepy and unnerving.
  5. SpongeBob not only sells everything he has but also all his clothes, which results in him being naked for the rest of the episode after he purchases Le Spatula, which is really illogical. Because he had to sell everything, he could have possibly sold Gary!
  6. Le Spatula, a one-time character in this episode, is an awful example of French stereotype. He hates Krabby Patties and considers them filth. Not to mention, he's an unlikable jerk for betraying SpongeBob and even punching him in the face.
  7. We have a couple of contrived plot holes:
    • Le Spatula is the only spatula SpongeBob wants to buy as if he's the only spatula in town. Doesn't Bikini Bottom even have a Spatula Store and doesn't Barg-N-Mart have a spatula? (since SpongeBob got his first spatula there).
    • Le Spatula has legs and a giant fist, even though he was only made for cooking and not sports.
    • SpongeBob's spatula was not sentient in previous episodes, yet suddenly, it was sentient in this one.
    • Why didn't SpongeBob just ask for a refund for Le Spatula?
  8. This episode had the highest amount of SpongeBob's depressing outbursts, probably even more so than later episodes like "Waiting", "A Day Without Tears", and "SpongeBob You're Fired."
  9. The very end where SpongeBob's arm breaks off is another stupid moment for the episode. Though, fortunately, we don't need to hear his crying again.
  10. Thanks to SpongeBob's excessive crying, there are no likable characters in this episode.
  11. This episode was supposed to be a soap opera parody, but it feels more like one of those tantrum videos you see on YouTube rather than being a soap opera parody, all thanks to SpongeBob continuously crying over a spatula.
  12. Last but not least, the scene where SpongeBob has a GIANT meltdown over Spat in the hospital and says his infamous quote "All that glitters is not gold." which is the most annoying part of the whole episode! Hell says not even Caillou can throw a tantrum that high!
  13. The moral of "all that glitters is not gold" doesn't work within the context of the episode, Spat broke and SpongeBob needed a replacement to do his job. The episode would make more sense if Spat didn't break and SpongeBob bought Le Spatula anyway.

Redeeming Qualities That Break the Mold[]

  1. The title card looks nice, and it's even animated well.
  2. The parts of SpongeBob crying over Spat while in therapy and Patrick coming up to the hill where SpongeBob is crying and he cries along with him is funny.
  3. While the flashback scene was too long, it has its moments, such as the part where SpongeBob fights a pirate with Spat.
  4. It has a good moral about how you shouldn't take things that you cherish for granted.
  5. A later episode, “Evil Spatula”, has a similar premise, except it was executed better than this episode.
  6. The only reason SpongeBob bought Le Spatula in the first place was because he clearly needed something to do his fry-cook job. With Spat broken, SpongeBob did not know where to turn next, despite how expensive Le Spatula was.
  7. As said in RQTBTM #2, the scene where SpongeBob reminiscing all the past times he has had with Spat was kind of sweet
  8. Some people might find naked spongebob funny.

How To Make It Break The Mold[]

  • Instead of Spat breaking, have it so Spat is working fine but SpongeBob buys Le Spatula anyway, than SpongeBob would actually replace Spat for a bad reason and the moral would make sense.
  • Get rid of all the crying scenes. None of us want to see SpongeBob crying like a baby.

Reception[]

This episode was met with mixed-to-negative reception. It currently sits with a 7.1 rating on IMDb, along with its ULTRA-famous sister episode "Wishing You Well".gt6

Trivia[]

  • The title is based upon a quote from William Shakespeare's play "The Merchant of Venice" (Act II, Scene VII): "All that glitters is not gold."
  • Ironically, This episode is paired with the ULTRA-famous episode Wishing You Well, which is almost the complete opposite of this episode. (I guess all that glitters is gold in that episode, and not this one!)
  • This episode would get a better version in 2013, being the ULTRA-famous Evil Spatula, and another better version in 2023, the ULTRA-famous episode, Spatula of the Heavens.
  • This is EmployeeAMillion's 2nd least favorite Season 4 episode.
